Reading app

The reading app offers beginning readers a motivating and fun way to practice reading syllables and words accurately. The use of pseudowords and speech recognition makes practice more varied. Since each word requires accurate reading of the syllables, practice remains exciting and motivating and words cannot be guessed or read out loud by heart. The ability to adapt the app to the child's level of learning and to set both known letters and the representation and length of the pseudowords contributes to individual support.

The app uses speech recognition to determine whether the pseudoword has been read correctly and provides appropriate feedback. The immediate feedback from the integrated speech recognition helps the child to improve their reading skills and track progress. If the reading recognition does not work, the word is read aloud to the child again, which further benefits the learning process and enables independent checking.

Overall, the reading app offers a good way to automate the reading process by synthesizing letters as a basis for fluent reading. The app is not suitable for promoting reading comprehension, but rather aims to practice reading syllables and words accurately. As a follow-up exercise, however, it is highly recommended to also practice reading comprehension of words and short sentences as soon as reading (pseudo)words is largely automated.

Notice: The integrated speech recognition and the speech output of the words generally work well, but not always optimally. This is due to technical reasons and unfortunately cannot be improved, as the integrated technology on iOS is used. Please therefore discuss with the beginning reader that the app can sometimes make mistakes.

Another tip: You can change the voice for the speech output yourself and install higher quality voices for the speech output in the general settings (Accessibility – Spoken content – Voices).
