New app: Math Stories – AI-supported learning aid for word problems

Word problems pose a particular challenge for many children. They require text and situation comprehension, the recognition of mathematically relevant information, its translation into a mathematical model, and finally, the critical evaluation of the result. Now, with "Math Stories," an innovative AI-powered app is available to guide children in solving word problems.

AI as a learning aid, not as a solution provider

The use of AI in learning applications carries a risk: if the system simply provides solutions, no learning takes place. Therefore, "Math Stories" takes a different approach. The AI has been specifically optimized for didactic support based on subject-specific teaching methods for mathematical problems.

Specifically, this means that the AI doesn't provide answers, but rather asks clarifying questions, directs attention to relevant information, and encourages reflection. The assistance begins with open-ended prompts and only becomes more specific if a child gets stuck. This approach follows Polya's four-phase model and aims to empower children to solve problems independently, not to relieve them of the burden of problem-solving.

Math Stories is available for free as a web app at math stories.urff.app Available and works on all devices with a modern browser. A separate API key from Google AI Studio or Groq is required to use the AI features.

For iPad and iPhone, there is also a native app available in the App Store, which integrates AI usage and does not require a separate access key.
